Oxbridge Mentoring

Could you apply to Oxbridge?

We love Oxbridge mentoring because we’re strong believers in extra-curricular learning. The reason Oxbridge entry is notoriously challenging is because there are no short-cuts. Students are expected to demonstrate true passion for their subject and an intellectual curiosity, which often involves independent exploration outside the school curriculum.

We pair potential applicants with an Oxbridge mentor who prepares them for the type of this thinking required and gives them exposure to exciting new subject material based on their interests, alongside rigorous admissions test practise, mock interviews, course and college choice support.

The Oxbridge-style of tutorial-based teaching requires students to orally communicate, defend, analyse & critique ideas, in conversations with professors. Interviews mimic this tutorial style to assess if an applicant is teachable. We prepare students for the levels of critical thinking required and boost their confidence to discuss ideas at this level. We encourage students to read widely and explore theories and topics in which they are interested, before in-depth tutorial discussions. Mentors will suggest material, widen each student’s specialist knowledge and as a result, prepare them for each application stage.

Programmes

Before applying for a programme, we offer subject taster sessions with a mentor who studied the specific course at Oxford or Cambridge, as well as informal aptitude assessments. We then pair the student with a primary mentor, who guides their independent preparation and gives them exposure to a range of subject areas and the level of thinking and discussion required for success in entry. We provide reading lists, arrange subject masterclasses with additional mentors who have specialisms in particular areas e.g Aerodynamics, law & morality, robotics, political theory…, organise Oxbridge visits and subject-specific work experience.

Oxbridge starter programme

Oxbridge Starter Programme (OXSTART)

Our OXSTART programme is aimed at Year 11 students (15-16) looking to apply to Oxbridge. We recommend that students start their journey with u2 on this programme. Our OXSTART programme is fully customisable dependent on the level of support required. The 1-1 tutorial sessions focus on honing student’s subject-specific interests beyond the school curriculum and giving them exposure to new material, carefully planned to prepare each student for the level required at application. Each applicant receives a complete Oxbridge manual which guides them step-by-step through the application process, subject-specific tips and suggested reading or activities. A typical programme might include:

  • Individual application manual

  • Course choice and application guidance

  • 20 x 1-1 tutorial sessions

  • Admissions test support

  • Progress consultations

  • Relevant experience organised (e.g. accompanied trips to Oxbridge lectures, subject-specific work placements)

Oxbridge Application Programme

Oxbridge Application Programme (OXAPPS)

Our OXAPPS programme is tailored for Year 12 (16-17) students embarking on their Oxbridge journey, going forward with their application. Our OXAPPS programme combines application guidance and support, including college choice and course advice with subject-specific teaching from a team of mentors in a given subject. Potential applicants are given an insight into the levels required for successful application, subjected to the rigours of the tutorial process through exposure to new materials and ways of thinking critically around a subject. Most fundamentally, students are provided with extensive personal statement and admissions test support. The OXAPPS programme typically includes:

  • Individual application manual

  • Course choice and application guidance

  • 20 x 1-1 tutorial sessions

  • Admissions test support

  • Progress consultations

  • Relevant experience organised

  • Personal statement sessions

Oxbridge Master Programme (OXMASTER)

Our Master programme is pioneered to offer extensive, long-term support including application guidance and subject mentoring, as well as comprehensive personal statement support, admissions test and interview preparation. The OXMASTER Programme brings together subject-specific expertise from our entire team of Oxbridge mentors, to support each stage of a student’s application. Though customised, a typical programme covers 2-3 months preparation in stages:

Stage 1

Stage 1 takes care of the initial components of application, guiding applicants through the process of college/ course choice, personal statement and test preparation. Mentors ensure each student has the tools and knowledge necessary to submit an exceptional application of the standard necessary to be considered for entry. Subject-specific work experience is arranged as well as masterclasses with subject experts, often Oxbridge PhD level graduates or published tutors.

Stage 2

Stage 2 is a period of educational transformation whereby a student prepares for the rigours of interview through extensive exposure to subject-specific material and new concepts. Tutorial-style sessions ensure each student develops the ability to communicate ideas effectively, gaining access to subject expertise from their primary mentor as well as a whole team of supplementary mentors in their given subject.

Stage 3

An intensive preparation period involving mock interview days, assessments and feedback consultations.
